Windows 2003 Server End of Support – What it means for your clinic

You may have heard about it already, but it is now official: Windows Server 2003 support is ending July 14, 2015; See the official announcement on the Microsoft website.
What does end of support mean for you? After July 14, Microsoft will no longer issue security updates for any version of Windows Server 2003. This there will be no more bug fixes from Microsoft, and your server will be exposed to hacking and viruses.
If you are still running Windows Server 2003, you need to take steps now to plan and execute a migration strategy to protect your infrastructure and your data. You basically have 2 options:

Option 1 – Upgrade your servers

Which means you will have to;

  • Purchase one or several licenses of Windows Server 2012
  • Purchase one or several servers, as your current servers will probably not be sufficient to run the latest edition of Windows Server
  • Ask your network administrator to migrate all your data and applications from your old servers to the new ones. (you may want to do this yourself, but do not underestimate the hidden cost associated with wasting your time doing IT work…. Unless it’s your hobby!). Note that some of your old applications may not be compatible with Server 2012 and you may have to purchase new versions of these applications too.

Option 2: Get rid of your servers and move to Animana

Because it is a Web-based application, when you use Animana you do not have to worry about owning and maintaining your servers, we do it all for you, and it’s included in our monthly fee.
